From a single idea a tradition is born.
The Raleigh Coin Club recently unveiled the promotional wooden nickel associated with it’s annual Money Expo, which is scheduled for June 7-9. This marks the second year, and the start of a tradition, wherein the club’s promotional wooden nickels will feature designs submitted, but not selected, for North Carolina’s 2001 Statehood Quarter.
The 2019 Raleigh Money Expo™ promotional wooden nickel features an outline map of the state with a star showing the capital, Raleigh’s position. It also features the state nickname Old North State shown above the state map, the state bird, the cardinal and the state flower. The flowering dogwood is also superimposed over and around the state map image.The design is the work of a local Raleigh area resident who prefers to remain anonymous, according to the club’s press release.
Showcasing Alternate Coin Designs
This tradition is in response to positive feedback from club members and the public regarding the 2018 Raleigh Money Expo™ promotional wooden nickel. The nickel featured another design submitted for consideration, but ultimately not chosen, for the Statehood Quarter. The design is the work of Daniel Carr, who is responsible for the designs appearing on the New York and Rhode Island Statehood Quarters. With Carr’s permission the club featured the image on the wooden nickel in 2018, and with the 2019 promotional coin issue begins a tradition.
The Raleigh Coin Club is currently investigating and seeking permission from other design submitters of 2001 North Carolina Statehood Quarter concepts for use of their designs on future issues of our Raleigh Money Expo™ promotional wooden nickel.
