Just a few days after the finer of two known 1975 No-S Roosevelt dime crossed the auction block at the Long Beach Expo for an outstanding $456,000, the little modern rarity that could managed to score yet another record-breaking price. It just traded hands in a private transaction for a stunning $516,000, easily becoming one of the most expensive, if not the most expensive modern United States coins ever sold, based on the definition of “modern,” of course.
The private deal involved Mitch Spivack and his son Justin Spivack of MonsterCoinMart, who sold the coin to an anonymous Roosevelt dime enthusiast. The 1975 No-S Roosevelt dime, graded PR68 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) now resides in the Halcyon Collection, ranking as one of the finest PCGS Registry Roosevelt dime sets.
“I purchased the 1975 no-S ‘Roosie’ out of the Heritage Auctions sale in Long Beach, California, along with [long-time Roosevelt dime collector] Steven Heller and my son Justin as partners,” Mitch Spivack told the press. “We received an offer for the dime the very next day, and a few days later consummated the sale of the dime. It was a great honor for me to own the finest known 1975 No S Dime if even for just a few days.”
The two known 1975 No-S Roosevelt dimes were discovered by the one California woman who bought bought a bulk order of five 1975 proof sets directly from the United States Mint in 1975. She soon submitted the dimes to ANACS for authentication and in the late 1970s sold the two proof sets containing the rare dime errors to Illinois coin dealer Fred Vollmer. Both of the dimes took thousands of dollars apiece when he sold them months after he purchased them; the example that just topped a half-million dollars was contained in a proof set that Vollmer sold to a private collector in 1980 for $38,550.
