CHICAGO — Chicago demonstrates well how to celebrate the events, accomplishments, and people who make a difference. It’s visible through the support of sports teams, art and music, business, education, and coin collecting.
As the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois prepares to welcome numismatists from around the world for The World’s Fair of Money® Aug. 13-17, Chicago’s mayor Lori E. Lightfoot recently added another element to the city’s celebration of coin collecting. Her proclamation identifies Aug. 13 is “Chicago Coin Club Day,” in honor of the Chicago Coin Club’s 100th anniversary.
In another act of recognition, State Representative John C. D’Amico has introduced a resolution recognizing the Chicago Coin Club’s 100th Anniversary. The resolution is expected to be passed and signed during the legislatures Sept. session.
A Century of Evolution
The Chicago Coin Club is treating the full year of 2019 as a celebration of being steadfast to its objective, which is “To pursue numismatic knowledge through the study and research of coins, currency, medals, tokens, and other related items and the sharing of this information through monthly meetings, dialogue, and the publication of literature.”
As Margaret Mead is credited with saying, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” It may be a little robust to quote Margaret Mead in this instance, but her statement describes what this club has done in its corner of the world. Through generations of social and economic change, the Chicago Coin Club has consistently provided space and opportunities for coin and note collectors to connect, learn together, and share their interest with others. The Club began with 15 people who were members of other groups, which are no longer active.
The Club has achieved several accomplishments in a century of activity, hosting several ANA national conventions, issuing various medals and commemorative pieces, and publishing several books.
The Club will host a meeting open to the public on Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Donald E Stevenson Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois.
